What are the different types of dark circles?
As you have understood, the origin of dark circles is multifactorial; lack of sleep being just one factor among others. But, did you know that the dark circles themselves differ in everyone. Indeed, there are different types of dark circles, but it is possible to differentiate them thanks to their coloring.

To better address the problem, it would be good to look at this distinction:

Pigmented (or pigmented) dark circles: these are generally brown or black dark circles under the eyes, the result of excess melanin in this area.
Vascular dark circles: here, the dark circles turn blue, pink or purple. They are caused by a dysfunction of blood circulation in the eyes.
Hollow dark circles: These deep dark circles can take on different shades. The hollowing of the eye socket testifies to the ongoing process of aging.
Characteristics of each type and their specific treatment
As suggested above: a healthy lifestyle and restful sleep are often the key to limiting the appearance of these unpleasant dark circles. But there is also a range of targeted treatment options, provided by specialized ophthalmologists and dermatologists to treat this sensitive and delicate area.

Pigmented dark circles
This condition is technically called “idiopathic orbital ring hyperchromia.” It results from excessive production of melanin in the skin of the eyelids for congenital or acquired reasons. For this type of dark circles, a dermatologist can prescribe an effective treatment based on hydroquinone (home use).

Vascular rings
Their origin comes from poor microcirculation around the eyes, causing thinning and sagging of the skin. These dark circles are generally much more visible in people with thin, fair skin. In this type of case, the specialist can suggest thickening your skin using a specific peel.

Hollow dark circles
More structured, these dark circles are marked by a furrow running from the tear duct to the cheek region and can thus take on various shades. The most effective treatment for this type of dark circles is the fractional CO2 laser. Mesotherapy, radiofrequency and other filler treatments can also help. Additionally, your doctor will probably advise you to treat your eye area with a course of vitamins (C and E), retinol or hyaluronic acid.
